Tracing Tantric Traditions

from $10.00

Wednesdays, April 26th - July 12th, 7:00 to 9:00 PM ET

  • An advanced level course (see prerequisites)

  • Led by Derek Kolleeny and colleagues

  • Classes meet via Zoom

  • Suggested offering: $165*

Please join us in an exploration of the rich, beautiful, and mystifying roots of the tantric world we inherit from our teachers, the Practice Lineage of the Kagyus. We will begin with an overview of the development of tantric Buddhism in India and its transmission into Tibet. Then we will wander through the unpredictable and unconventional landscape inhabited by the five core founding fathers of the Kagyu lineage as portrayed by Chogyam Trungpa -- the wild and crazy Indian Mahasiddha Tilopa (988-1069); his student Naropa, the head scholar of Nalanda University (1016-1100); his student Marpa Chökyi Lodrö, the Translator (1012-1097); his student the great Tibetan yogi and poet Milarepa (1052-1135); and his student Gampopa (1079-1153), renowned for having established the lineage as we know it today. Finally, we will into the life of our root teacher, Chogyam Trungpa, and his experience in planting the dharma in the West, in his own words.

Prerequisites for this course include: a regular daily meditation practice for at least three years and a foundation in the view, practice and conduct of the hinayana and mahayana levels of buddhism as presented by Chogyam Trungpa. Completion of the WMC core curriculum consisting of the introductory Walking in the Footsteps of the Buddha courses, as well as our two Intermediate Curriculum courses--The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma, Volumes One and Two--and our advanced courses-- Exploring Vajrayana Parts One and Two—is preferred. If you are unsure whether you qualify, or would like to work out a plan to catch up, please contact Derek at dkolleeny@gmail.com.
