This is the second in a series of day-long workshops for those who have been meditating for some time, are interested in making further progress in strengthening shamatha and transitioning to vipashyana, and have attended at least one of our one-day meditation workshops—preferably the one led by Derek Kolleeny on February 21 st. In these intermediate level workshops, we will delve more deeply into shamatha and vipashyana, which are famous known as being the basis for all of the vast varieties of samadhis.

In this specific workshop we will build on the one held on February 21 which focused on shamatha. After a review of shamatha, we will delve into vipashyana meditation as known in the Mahayana tradition: how it arises from the base of shamatha; qualities and characteristics; obstacles and antidotes; and stages of progression.

Derek Kolleeny began the practice and study of Buddhism in 1976 and soon became a student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, attending his first of many Naropa Institute summer sessions in 1977. He earned a B.A. from Harvard College in the Comparative Study of World Religions, focused on Buddhism, including study of Sanskrit and Tibetan languages. During a year off from college, Derek was the assistant coordinator of the six-month US tour of HH the XVIth Gyalwa Karmapa in 1980 and attended the Vajradhatu Seminary and the Kalapa Assembly in 1981 at Lake Louise, in Alberta, Canada.

WMC is dedicated to diversity, equity, inclusion. Everyone is invited. Differences and unique perspectives are embraced.
