The concluding semester of this course will focus on the final sections of the book, which present fundamental aspects of the path of individual liberation. Having fully explored the qualities and essence of shamatha and vipashyana, the text turns to the fruition of practice.

We begin with the wisdom of understanding the Four Noble Truths in their full profundity. This fundamental scheme forms the framework for all traditions of Buddhism. Here Trungpa Rinpoche presents Four Noble Truths in rich detail, revealing their practical application.

The final sections of the book also include a thorough presentation of the stages of the path as presented in the Hinayana vehicle of Tibetan Buddhism. While some other presentations often focus on the advanced and seemingly distant stages, here Rinpoche focuses on the first stages, which is helpful in clarifying specific qualities we could be cultivating, and experiences we might expect to encounter. This path culminates in prajna, discussed in the final section, as the wisdom that “unravels the myth of ego.”

Participation in this course requires completion of the WMC Foundation Course, The Way of the Buddha, or an equivalent experience with Buddhist practice and study.* Students are encouraged to attend all or most class sessions, and in person whenever possible.
